During the summer preceding the outbreak of war we had to make arrangements for the ‘black-out’ of the Hall – a colossal task, for none of the landing and staircase windows had ever been curtained, and most of the existing curtains in the rooms had ultimately to be lined to make them really effective screens. Walls had to be plugged to hold curtain poles, and this in itself was a big task. 780 yards of material were bought and made up, 125 windows were dealt with, 64 sets of curtains were lined, and 36 spring blinds put in to screen skylights.
